Understanding OSHA's Flammable Liquid Std Ventilation Requirements
Safety Info Posts - Flammable Liquids

On average, we conduct around a dozen flammable liquid safety audits each year and I can not think of an audit where we were not asked about the ventilation requirements in 1910.106(e)(3)(v)(a) and/or NFPA 30, 17.11.1-10.  Both of these standards require an area where a Class I Flammable Liquid is being transferred or dispensed be ventilated at a rate of not less than 1 cubic foot per minute per square foot of solid floor area or a fancy way of saying it... 1 ft3/min/ft2 or in metrics 0.3 m3/min/m2

UPDATE - Calling the National Response Center
Safety Info Posts - Emergency Response

NRC image

Who at your place of business calls the National Response Center after your business has experienced a chemical incident.  Not many people have ever had to call this center (luckily!) but if your business ever does have a "reportable release"  a call just like this one MUST BE MADE within 30 minutes after you have determined that the release exceeds the "Reportable Quantity".

PLEASE CLICK HERE for more on EPA's Reportable Quantities.  Garden City Ammonia Program group did this drill call with the NRC so we can hear first hand how the call will be handled and the questions that will be asked.

Safety Info Posts - Safety Alerts

crane safety_alert2

On Saturday, December 17, 2011, a surface mechanic was seriously injured while setting a transmission into a CAT 777F rock truck using a truck-mounted hydraulic crane. The crane suddenly failed, allowing the boom to fall, striking him in the head and knocking him down between the frame rails of the truck. The victim was standing on the frame rail of the rock truck at the time of the accident.

New Recordkeeping interpretation. Question 10-4
Safety Info Posts - General Safety Topics

This "Hearing Loss Recordibility" question was added to the Recordkeeping Directive on 1/12/2012. What rules must an employer ensure that a physician or other licensed health care professional use to make a determination that a hearing loss case is not work-related under section 1904.10(b)(6)?

Start Each Day with Safety
Safety Info Posts - Safety Talks

Everyone’s lives seem to be very busy in this fast paced world. We rush to get to work and then rush home. We urge all workers to take one or two minutes at the beginning of each shift to talk about safety. Such talks can have several safety and operational benefits. The talks will prompt everyone to stop thinking about and/or worrying about non-work issues and help focus everyone on the job at hand for the day. It’s only one or two minutes out of the average 480 minute workday and it can pay huge dividends. You may ask what we could talk about everyday for a minute or two.  Here are just a few examples:

Use of High Visibility Vest in Safety Programs
Safety Info Posts - Chemical Process Safety (PSM/RMP)

Have you every walked up on a hotwork job and asked who is the fire watch, only to have five welders not even look up and point to each other? It happens, but there is a simple way to correct this behavioral problem - High Visibility Vests.

Industrial Scientific Announces Product Recall of GasBadge® Plus Single-Gas Monitors
Safety Info Posts - Safety Alerts

GasBadgePlus

Industrial Scientific Corporation has determined that the GasBadge® Plus single-gas instrument may not properly indicate a low battery condition resulting in a failure to alarm or instrument shut down.  This condition is worsened when the instrument is used in conditions below room temperature.  As a result, for safety reasons, Industrial Scientific is issuing a recall of all current GasBadge Plus instruments (v2.2 and earlier; manufactured prior to February 2012). NFPA 30 offers some GREAT facility siting for NEW process vessels
Safety Info Posts - Chemical Process Safety (PSM/RMP)

Anyone involved with PSM/RMP knows about "facility siting" and all the attention it has gotten since the Texas City, TX incident in 2005.  Many companies struggle with this type of analysis, so I am passing along some great data that could be used during an expansion project at an existing facility or for a new facility.  PLEASE note that even if your process does NOT fall under PSM or RMP, this data should still be used as many states use NFPA 30 (or some version) as their flammable liquid code.

What is the REAL PURPOSE of flammable storage cabinets?
Safety Info Posts - Flammable Liquids

40062IMG 0559

Ordinary glass containers exposed to heat will fail at about 212F (100C) due to thermally induced stress. Storage cabinets are designed to offer protection from radiant heat, but only for a limited time of intense fire exposure. These limitation MUST be recognized by the user.

FRC Alert (Cotton Treated Reaction)
Safety Info Posts - Safety Alerts

FRC Advisory 1-13-12

A contractor was wearing a cotton flame resistant garment (FRC). According to testing done by the Newtown Square Research Center and the clothing manufacturer, these fabrics can exothermically react with bleach solutions to produce enough heat to burn skin and give off toxic gases (see box in alert). Nomex flame resistant garments do NOT react similarly.  The manufacturer of the cotton FRC in this incident, Westex, cautions against the use of Bleach and Hydrogen Peroxide in their laundry guide but they do not communicate the potential for heat generation when these products are used.

What type of respirator do I need?
Safety Info Posts - General Safety Topics

Air-Purifying Respirator

One of the most common questions I used to get on emergency response scenes is "how do you determine when we can stop wearing SCBAs and begin wearing Air Purifying Respirators".  The decision is often a heated debate, due to the users lack of knowledge.  The scary part, these are trained HAZMAT Technicians who should know better.  But a quick survey of some clients and SAFTENG members I found there are a lot of folks out there who may not fully understand the decision logic behind the type of respiratory protection is needed.  So here we go... A grim Top Ten list: COSH names 2011's notable workplace fatalities
Safety Info Posts - General Safety Topics

I am not positive that this is a legit list, as there is NOTHING new on this org's website since 2009!  But all the incidents are legit as I covered them in the Incident Alerts.  Not sure who or what org put this together, but it it relevant info for safety discussions.  From agriculture to mining to health care, the occupational fatalities that made the 2011 top ten list compiled by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health's (COSH) spanned many industries and highlighted notable gaps in regulatory attempts to address workplace hazards.
