A collection of flammable liquid safety videos.   If you have ANY amount of flammable liquids, these are a MUST SEE for the workers who work with and around flammable liquids.  Most of the segments are VERY SHORT (<1 minute) and are designed to be used as safety talks.  Some are from the Chemical Safety Board and are more detailed training for those facilities who store and handle flammables in a flammable liquids process. I use them in my 3 & 5 days flammable liquid training courses.  SOME THINGS DO NOT CHANGE - some of these videos are from the 1940's and 60's and STILL TODAY depict the hazards of flammable liquids!

Another incident at a fuel pump where the customer exited their vehicle while the gasoline was flowing and reached for the nozzle, only to ignite the vapors exiting the tank via their static electricity.  The customer then made another critical error by removing the nozzle and spreading the fire.  It certainly looks as if the nozzle was still open when she removed it.

This is an excellent demonstration showing the ignition of gasoline vapors with static electricity.  A few important points to call out before you watch the video:

  1. Gasoline vapors have an MIE less than 1.0 mJ
  2. "Splashing filling" is a HUGE generator of static
  3. Watch how they make a point to be sure the nozzle is NOT in contact with the container (e.g. nozzle NOT bonded to the container)
  4. The container is NOT grounded; meant to mimic a gas tank in a car on rubber tires.

I am not 100% convinced this was a "diesel tank".  Having seen over a dozen diesel tanks explode (most in tests) this explosion looks nothing like it.  It is not a boil-over either, but I am pretty sure the FD would know the difference between LPG tank and a diesel tank.  In what I can see this was a BLEVE, but do BLEVE's occur with atmospheric vessels containing combustible liquids with high BP's?  Watch and let me know what you think...
